TL;DR
- Chatbot prices run from free plans to quoted enterprise contracts. The pricing model decides how the bill grows after you sign, more than the starting price does.
- Per seat charges for the people answering, per conversation for traffic, per resolution for answers the AI finishes, a flat fee for the workspace, and per meeting for sales meetings booked.
- On most live chat products the AI agent is a second line on the bill. LiveChat, Intercom, Freshchat, Zendesk and Tidio all charge for it on top of the plan.
- In our worked example for a two-person team, the same month of chat costs more than 7 times as much on the most expensive tool as on the cheapest.

Written by Ari Goldstein, Founder & CEO, Darwin. We make Darwin, one of the products reviewed here; our editorial policy says how we handle that.
A website chatbot costs anything from nothing to a quoted annual contract. Free plans run a basic chat for a small team. Most live chat products charge per agent seat and bill the AI agent on top, standalone AI chatbots charge by conversations or message credits, support platforms add a fee for each conversation the AI resolves, and enterprise sales chat is quoted after a demo. What you pay a few months in depends more on which of those models you pick than on the starting price.
This guide explains each model, lists the published starting prices for ten tools, works through one month of chat for a two-person team, and covers the costs that are not on the pricing page.
A disclosure: we make Darwin, AI website chat that books meetings and charges per booked meeting, so we are not neutral. Per meeting is one of the six models here, and it only suits a site whose chat exists to book sales meetings. Most people pricing a chatbot are buying it for support, where seats, conversations or resolutions fit better, so Darwin comes last in the tool sections. Every price comes from the vendor's own pricing page and shows the date we last checked it.
Chatbot pricing models at a glance
| Model | What the bill tracks | Published examples |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Nothing, until you hit a branding, seat or message limit | tawk.to's live chat is free, with unlimited agents. HubSpot's free tools include live chat and a limited chatbot with HubSpot branding. |
| Per seat | How many people can answer chats | LiveChat $25/agent/mo, Intercom $39/seat/mo, Zendesk $69/agent/mo, Help Scout $30/user/mo |
| Per conversation or message | How much the bot talks | Tidio from $29/mo with a conversation quota; Chatbase from $40/mo with message credits |
| Per resolution or outcome | How often the AI finishes a conversation without a person | Fin pricing starts at $0.99 per outcome. Help Scout, HubSpot and Zendesk also charge by resolution. |
| Flat fee | Nothing that scales; one price per workspace | Crisp $45/mo |
| Per booked meeting | Meetings the chat books, and requests that pass your fit rules | Darwin $30/credit after the first 5 free credits |
| Quote only | Whatever the sales call decides | Qualified's enterprise tiers are priced by quote. |
How we checked these prices
We picked ten chatbots that between them cover every pricing model: the free and per-seat live chat products small businesses usually compare, two standalone AI chatbot builders, the support platforms that charge by resolution, a flat-fee option, and Darwin.
- Sources. We read each vendor's pricing page in September 2026 and again on 5 October 2026. Each price is stored as a fact with its source and the date we last confirmed it, which you can see by hovering over a table cell.
- Billing period. Many vendors list a monthly and a lower annual rate. Our facts say which one they quote; where both are listed, we used the monthly rate, because that is what you pay while you are still deciding.
- Quoted prices. Qualified publishes no prices, so on 2 October 2026 we asked the chat on Qualified's own website what it costs. It would not give a starting price or a range.SourcesQualified
- Limits. We did not buy every plan, and meters, overages and add-ons change often, so read the vendor's page before you sign. Not documented means the page did not confirm something, not that the product lacks it.
The pros and cons under each tool are shared with our other guides. The pricing notes and verdicts are written for this one.
Free chatbots: what free actually covers
Free is real, and several serious products will run a website chat for a small team at no cost for as long as you like. What changes when you pay is rarely the chat window. It is the branding, the number of people who can answer, the AI, or the volume.
tawk.to goes furthest. tawk.to's live chat is free, with unlimited agents. The AI and a clean widget are where it charges. AI Assist, which answers chats from your website, documents and FAQs, starts at $29 per month; removing the Powered by tawk.to branding is $29 per month. HubSpot's free tools include live chat and a limited chatbot with HubSpot branding. Its free bot follows a flow you build rather than answering on its own. Tidio, Crisp, Freshchat, Help Scout, Jotform and Chatbase also have free plans, with limits a busy site reaches quickly. Chatbase's Free plan is $0 with 50 message credits a month and one member.Sourcestawk.to +3HubSpotChatbase
Free suits a site with light traffic that does not need AI answers. Once you want the bot to answer from your content, or to take the vendor's badge off, you are on a paid plan, and the model you land in starts to matter.
Per seat: you pay for people, not for the bot
Most chatbots on the market are a feature of a live chat or help desk product, and those products charge per agent seat. LiveChat's Starter plan is $25/agent/mo, Intercom's Essential seat $39/seat/mo, Zendesk's Suite Team $69/agent/mo, Freshchat's Growth plan $23/agent/mo and Help Scout's Standard plan $30/user/mo.SourcesLiveChatIntercomZendeskFreshworksHelp Scout
The bill grows with coverage, not with chats. Two people covering the working day need two seats, and covering evenings and weekends takes more people. A team of eight on Intercom pays for eight seats before the AI answers a single question.
The AI is usually not in the seat price. Take LiveChat. The customer-facing AI Agent is a separate Text product from $19 per user per month, billed annually. Intercom bills its Fin agent per outcome on top of the seats, and Freshchat meters its Freddy agent once an included allowance is used. Freddy AI Agent costs $49 per 100 sessions after the free allowance. The per-seat price pays for the people; the chatbot is the line under it.SourcesLiveChat +1Freshworks
Per conversation or message: you pay for traffic
Standalone AI chatbots mostly count conversations or message credits. Tidio sizes its paid plans by billable conversations, starting at $29/mo, and sells its AI agent's conversations as a separate quota. Lyro's quota starts at $39 per month for 50 conversations on monthly billing. Chatbase counts message credits instead. Paid plans start with Hobby at $40 per month for 700 message credits; Standard is $150 for 4,000 and Pro $500 for 15,000. Jotform tiers its AI agents by monthly conversations. Paid plans start with Bronze at $39 per month for 1,000 conversations; Silver is $49 for 2,500 and Gold $129 for 10,000.SourcesTidioChatbaseJotform
This model is cheap on a quiet site and expensive on a busy one, and the vendor's definition of a conversation decides the bill. Some count a conversation when the widget opens, others only when a visitor types, and an AI reply can use more than one credit. Read the definition before you compare two prices.
Then check what happens at the cap. Some tools stop answering, some charge an overage, and some move you to the next plan. The pricing page usually says which, in small type.
Per resolution: you pay when the bot succeeds at support
Support platforms now charge for outcomes. Intercom's Fin is the best-known example. Fin pricing starts at $0.99 per outcome. Help Scout's AI Answers works the same way. AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution as an add-on. HubSpot's customer agent spends credits instead. The customer agent uses 50 HubSpot Credits per resolved conversation. Zendesk includes some resolutions with each seat. Plans include 5 automated resolutions per agent per month (10 on Suite Professional), up to 10,000 a year. AI agents are billed per automated resolution beyond the plan allowance: $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go.SourcesIntercomHelp ScoutHubSpot +1Zendesk
For support, the logic is sound: you pay when a question did not need a person. The catch is that the vendor defines a resolution, usually as a conversation the visitor did not escalate, and a visitor who gave up looks much like one who was helped. Ask how resolutions are counted and whether you can dispute one.
For a sales site, a resolved conversation is not the goal; a booked meeting is. Intercom's answer is a separate per-lead price for Fin for Sales, covered in its section below.
Flat fee and quote-only: the two ends
A few tools charge one price per workspace, whatever the volume, and Crisp is the clearest example. Mini is $45 per month per workspace. AI credits are included per plan: $5 on Mini, $25 on Essentials, $75 on Plus. A flat fee is easy to budget and generous for a busy small team, though seat limits usually push a growing team up a tier.SourcesCrisp
At the other end are enterprise conversational marketing platforms that print no price at all. Qualified's enterprise tiers are priced by quote. When we asked Qualified's own chat for a starting price or a typical range, it would not give either. The price may well be justified for a large Salesforce team, but you cannot compare it with anything on this page until after a sales call. If you are replacing Drift, our Drift alternatives guide covers the options; Darwin vs Qualified covers that trade-off.SourcesQualified +1
Per booked meeting: you pay when the chat books a sales meeting
Here the bill tracks meetings the chat puts on your calendar, and requests that pass your fit rules. Darwin prices this way. Its Free plan costs $0/mo and includes 5 free credits once, then charges $30/credit; paid plans start at $299/mo with credits included every month. The nearest thing elsewhere in this guide is Intercom's Fin for Sales, which charges per qualified lead rather than per meeting. Fin for Sales charges $9.99 per qualified lead.SourcesDarwinIntercom
The appeal is that the bill and the pipeline move together. A quiet month costs little or nothing, and a month that costs more is one that filled the calendar. There are no seats to buy, and answering questions is not metered.
The limits are just as plain. Per-meeting pricing only makes sense when meetings are what you want from the chat; a support queue would be paying for the wrong thing. And with any per-meeting or per-lead price, ask how cancelled, rescheduled and no-show meetings are counted.

What a month of chat costs: a worked example
Prices per unit are hard to compare, so here is one month worked through for each tool. The company is a small B2B business: two people answer chat, the site gets about 100 chat conversations a month, the AI handles 50 of them without a person, and four visitors book a sales meeting. We used list prices on monthly billing where the vendor lists them, before tax and discounts.
One month of chat for a two-person team
| Tool and plan | What the bill covers | Monthly bill |
|---|---|---|
| The free chat plus the AI Assist add-on | from $29 | |
| One plan fee; its message credits must cover the bot's replies | $40 | |
| One flat workspace fee, with AI credits included | $45 | |
| 2 seats; Freddy sessions come from the one-time included allowance while it lasts | $46 | |
| Starter covers 100 conversations; Lyro's quota covers 50 | $68 | |
| 4 meetings at the per-credit price, once the free credits are used | $120 | |
| 2 seats, plus the AI Agent for 2 users at its annual rate and one 50-resolution top-up | $137.50 | |
| 2 seats plus 50 resolutions | $97.50 | |
| The plan fee, with 10 credits included | $299 | |
| 2 seats plus 50 Fin outcomes | $127.50 | |
| 2 seats; 10 resolutions included, 40 more at the pay-as-you-go rate | $218 |

- tawk.to. AI Assist, which answers chats from your website, documents and FAQs, starts at $29 per month; removing the Powered by tawk.to branding is $29 per month.Sourcestawk.to +2
- Darwin. Free charges $30 per credit after the first five. Growth is $299 per month on monthly billing. Growth includes 10 credits a month; Agency includes 25, pooled across up to 200 client workspaces.SourcesDarwin
Read the totals with the job in mind. Most of the support tools answer questions well but send a link for meetings, if they handle them at all; Chatbase and Freshchat can offer a time inside the chat. Darwin books the meetings but has no inbox for the two people. Seat limits on the cheaper plans vary, so check that your team fits before you compare. And the order changes with your numbers: double the AI-handled conversations and the per-resolution tools climb, double the meetings and Darwin does.

Zendesk is a help desk with a chatbot in it, priced as a help desk. Buy it for ticketing, not for a website chat whose job is booking meetings.

Tidio pricing
Small businesses and online stores that want an affordable widget with an AI agent.
B2B sales teams that need the meeting booked inside the chat, not a link.
- How it charges
- Conversation-based
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- 7 day trial
- Books in the chat
- Shares a Calendly link
Tidio starts free and then sells conversations. Starter is $29 per month on monthly billing. Starter includes 100 billable conversations; Growth starts at 250.SourcesTidio
Lyro, the AI agent, has a quota of its own. Lyro's quota starts at $39 per month for 50 conversations on monthly billing. A busy site therefore buys volume twice, once for conversations handled by people and once for Lyro's.SourcesTidio
Lyro can share a Calendly scheduling link through a Book-a-call Action. Side-by-side: Darwin vs Tidio. Prices are on Tidio's pricing page.SourcesTidio +1
Tidio pros
- A free plan, and a free trial of the paid features
- Lyro trains on website URLs you provide
- Simple setup for non-technical teams
Tidio cons
- Meeting booking is a shared link, not a calendar inside the chat
- Priced by conversation volume, so costs climb with traffic
- Built for support and e-commerce, not B2B pipeline
What Tidio users say
Users like
The AI replies are well-suited and provide accurate responses to our customers.
Tidio's Lyro AI agent takes routine, repetitive questions off small support teams.
I had the widget live and a basic bot flow running in under an hour
Small teams find Tidio quick to install and easy to use day to day.
Users complain about
AI-generated responses sometimes need a quick review to make sure they fit the context
Tidio's AI replies can miss context, feel impersonal or get answers wrong, so specific questions still need a person.
SourcesG2Lyro conversations are billed separately, so costs get unpredictable on higher-traffic sites.
Tidio's real bill often runs well above the entry price once Lyro, Flows and more conversations are added.

Tidio is well priced for a small store with modest traffic. For a site with real volume, count your conversations, human and AI, before you count on the price.

Chatbase pricing
Teams that want one AI agent, trained on their website and documents, working across web chat, email, voice and WhatsApp.
Site owners who only want a simple chat bubble with the least setup.
- How it charges
- Message credits
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- Free plan
- Books in the chat
- Calendly or Cal.com in chat
Chatbase sells message credits. Chatbase's Free plan is $0 with 50 message credits a month and one member. Paid plans start with Hobby at $40 per month for 700 message credits; Standard is $150 for 4,000 and Pro $500 for 15,000.SourcesChatbase
Every AI reply uses credits, so the bill follows how much the bot talks rather than how many visitors it meets. Extra agents and removing the Chatbase branding are paid add-ons, which is how a small plan becomes a bigger one.
Booking is possible inside the chat. Calendly and Cal.com actions let customers check availability and book meetings without leaving the chat. Prices are on Chatbase's pricing page.SourcesChatbase
Chatbase pros
- Books meetings in the chat through Calendly or Cal.com actions
- Trains on websites, files, Notion pages and support tickets
- An official WordPress plugin, and documented installs for Webflow and Framer
- One agent can work across chat, email, voice and WhatsApp
Chatbase cons
- The free plan's message credits run out fast
- Free-plan agents are deleted after 14 days of inactivity
- Removing Chatbase branding is a paid add-on

Crisp pricing
Small support teams and online stores that want chat, a shared inbox and an AI agent on one flat monthly bill.
Teams that need meetings booked from the chat.
- How it charges
- Flat per workspace
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- Free plan
- Books in the chat
- Not documented
Crisp charges one price per workspace, whatever your conversation volume. Crisp's Free plan is free forever and includes 2 seats. Mini is $45 per month per workspace.SourcesCrisp
AI credits are included per plan: $5 on Mini, $25 on Essentials, $75 on Plus. That keeps the bill fixed, but a busy month can use up the AI credits before it ends.SourcesCrisp
Crisp's pricing page does not document meeting booking or what the AI agent learns from, so ask both questions before you buy it for a sales site. Prices are on Crisp's pricing page.
Crisp pros
- One flat price per workspace, however many conversations come in
- A free plan with no time limit, and a trial of paid plans without a card
- AI credits included in every paid plan
- Its AI agent can learn from your website, help articles, past conversations and files
Crisp cons
- Meeting booking is not documented
- No AI credits on the free plan

Reviewers find Crisp quick to set up and simple to use, including its mobile app.
The customer support is top-notch and very professional.
Crisp's support team is the most praised thing about it: quick, kind and hands-on, even with bot setup.
Users complain about
as a long-term Mini customer, I feel that the jump to Essentials is quite significant.
Crisp's price jumps sharply between plans and as contacts or workspaces grow, and the free plan pushes upgrades.

Darwin pricing
Teams that want website chat to book sales meetings, set up themselves and priced per meeting or qualified request.
Teams that need a support inbox, outbound email, or company-level visitor identification.
- How it charges
- Plan fee + credits
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- 5 free credits
- Books in the chat
- In chat: Calendly, Google, RevenueHero
Darwin is website chat for sales. It reads your site to draft its knowledge, brand and opening lines, answers visitors from your content, and offers a meeting time inside the chat through Calendly, Google Calendar or RevenueHero.
Free costs $0/mo and includes 5 free credits once; after those it charges $30/credit. Paid plans start at $299/mo. Growth includes 10 credits a month; Agency includes 25, pooled across up to 200 client workspaces. Extra credits cost $25 each. Choosing more credits each month lowers the rate: on Growth, $20 at 35 credits, $16 at 60 and $12 at 110; on Agency, $10 at 275 and $8 at 525.SourcesDarwin
With automatic testing on, Darwin tries different opening lines on each page, promotes the ones that bring more visitors to the booking step (never one that books fewer meetings) and starts the next test from the winner. Among the other tools here, Intercom and Zendesk document A/B tests that you set up, LiveChat documents manual campaign tests, Tidio's flows can show different welcome messages at random, and the rest do not describe testing their greetings.SourcesDarwinIntercomZendesk helpLiveChat
Darwin has no ticketing and no shared inbox, so it is the wrong purchase for a support queue. See how Darwin works, or work out your own numbers on the pricing page.
SourcesDarwin
Darwin pros
- With automatic testing on, it tests its own openings and promotes the winners
- Drafts its setup from your website URL
- Offers a time inside the chat, through Calendly, Google Calendar or RevenueHero
- Priced per booked meeting or qualified request, not per seat or per answer
Darwin cons
- Website chat only: no email sequences, no visitor identification
- Not a support inbox; there is no ticketing
- A young product with a shorter track record than the incumbents
Darwin's pricing fits a site whose chat exists to book sales meetings: the bill grows with meetings, not seats or conversations. For a support queue, one of the seat, conversation or resolution tools above is the better buy.
How we reviewed Darwin: Our own product. Facts come from Darwin's public docs and pricing page, checked on the same schedule as every other tool; cons written by the team that builds it.

The costs that are not on the pricing page
Five things move a chatbot bill after you sign, and none of them is in the headline price.
- The AI add-on. On most live chat products the seat price pays for people; the bot that answers on its own is a second line, metered by session, resolution or credit.
- Branding removal. Free and entry plans often show the vendor's badge on your widget, and taking it off is a paid tier or a paid add-on.
- Seat limits and tiers. Flat and per-seat plans cap how many people can answer, and the next tier is usually a step up, not a slope.
- Annual versus monthly. Many vendors show the annual rate first. The monthly rate, which is what you pay while you are still deciding, is usually higher.
- Onboarding fees. Some plans add a one-time setup charge. HubSpot charges a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee for Sales Hub Professional.SourcesHubSpot
Building a chatbot yourself has its own costs: a developer's time to build it, and a model provider's bill for every message it sends. That is a different decision from the one this guide covers.
How to choose a chatbot pricing model
Name what you want the chat to produce, then find the model that charges for that and as little else as possible.
- A support team with a steady queue. Seats suit you, and the AI add-on is the number to negotiate, because that is where the bill will grow.
- A busy site where most questions are simple. Per conversation can get expensive, so read the definition of a conversation, or take a flat plan and stop counting.
- You want the bot to close tickets by itself. Per resolution is a fair deal, as long as you agree in advance on how a resolution is counted.
- The chat exists to book sales meetings. Look for a price tied to the sales result, such as per booked meeting or per qualified lead, and check that the meeting is booked inside the chat rather than through a link.
- An enterprise sales team on Salesforce. Expect a quote, and get it in writing before the renewal date.
Whichever model you choose, ask three questions before you sign: what exactly gets counted, what happens when you reach the cap, and what the monthly price is if you leave after the first month.
AI chat questions.
How much does a chatbot cost?
From nothing to a quoted contract. tawk.to, HubSpot, Tidio, Crisp, Freshchat and Chatbase all have free plans. Per-seat products start at $25/agent/mo for LiveChat, $39/seat/mo for Intercom and $69/agent/mo for Zendesk, with the AI agent billed on top. Tidio's paid plans start at $29/mo and Chatbase's at $40/mo. Darwin charges $30/credit on its Free plan once the free credits are used, and Qualified quotes after a demo.
How much does an AI chatbot cost per month?
It depends on whether the AI is the product or an add-on. Where it is the product, plans are sized by conversations or credits: Chatbase's Hobby plan is $40/mo, and Tidio sells its Lyro agent as a separate quota. Lyro's quota starts at $39 per month for 50 conversations on monthly billing. Where the AI is an add-on to a live chat seat, you pay for the seat and then a metered rate. Fin pricing starts at $0.99 per outcome. Read the vendor's definition of a conversation or an outcome before comparing two numbers.
Are there free chatbots for websites?
Yes, and some are good. tawk.to's chat is free with unlimited agents, HubSpot's free tools include a rule-based bot, and Tidio, Crisp, Freshchat and Chatbase all have free tiers. What you usually give up is AI answers, a widget without the vendor's badge, or volume.
What does per-resolution chatbot pricing mean?
You pay each time the AI finishes a conversation without a person. Intercom's Fin, Help Scout's AI Answers, HubSpot's customer agent and Zendesk's AI agents all charge this way, in money or credits. Fin pricing starts at $0.99 per outcome. It rewards the bot for doing the support job, which is fair, as long as you agree with how the vendor decides a conversation was resolved rather than abandoned.
Is a chatbot worth the cost?
For support, usually, if it takes repeat questions off a person and you pay per resolution or a flat fee rather than for seats you did not need. For sales, only if it leads to meetings: a bot that answers well and then asks for an email address may lose the prospect, whatever the plan costs. Measure it on what you wanted from it, tickets closed or meetings booked, and price it that way if you can.
