What to take away.
- People leave Intercom over the bill, not the product: seats, then Fin's per-resolution fee, then add-ons, and the total climbs when the AI does its job.
- Pick by job. A support inbox, live chat on a budget, and website chat that books meetings are three different purchases, and the best tool differs for each.
- If chat is supposed to produce pipeline, Darwin is the only option here that books the meeting in the conversation and improves its own opening lines without anyone running tests.
- Free plans exist at every level: Help Scout, Crisp, Chatwoot, tawk.to, Tidio, HubSpot and Darwin all let you start without a card conversation.
To be clear about which Intercom we mean: the customer messaging platform, not the box by the front door. If you are hunting for an alternative you probably know the reason already, and it is rarely the product itself. It is the invoice. You pay a seat price for every person, and then the AI is metered on top of that: Fin pricing starts at $0.99 per outcome. Add-ons go on top of both, so the total keeps climbing precisely when the AI is doing its job well.
There is a quieter second reason that comes up in every sales team we talk to. They bought Intercom because it was the best chat widget on the market, and then found out it is a support product at heart. Getting a meeting booked from the chat is possible, but it is a bolt-on rather than the point of the thing.
A disclosure before the list. We make Darwin, which is AI website chat that answers questions and books meetings, so we have a stake in the third group below. We have still written the list we would hand a friend, and most of it is tools that do jobs Darwin does not do. Every price and plan detail comes from the vendor's own published pages and carries the date we last checked it.
The list is split three ways because “Intercom alternative” means three different purchases. If you need a support inbox with a help center, start with Help Scout or Zendesk. If you want live chat and a bot without a support platform around it, Tidio, Crisp or the free tawk.to. If chat is supposed to turn visitors into meetings, Darwin, and HubSpot if you already pay for it.

Why teams look for an Intercom alternative
Intercom's own pricing page tells most of the story. Seats start at $39/seat/mo, and the AI agent is metered separately: Fin pricing starts at $0.99 per outcome. That is a fair model for a support team that wants to count deflected tickets. It is a strange one for a sales team, because the better Fin gets at answering questions, the bigger the bill, whether or not any of those answers led anywhere.
Then there is fit. Intercom's knowledge, inbox, help center and reporting all assume the conversation ends in a resolved ticket. If yours is supposed to end in a booked demo, you are configuring around the product. Fin for Sales can qualify leads and book in Messenger. It works, but it is an integration on top of a support tool, not the reason the tool exists.
The third reason is size. Small teams with two people and one inbox do not need most of what Intercom ships, and they notice when the trial ends. There is a 14 day trial and no free plan after it.
- You pay per seat and per AI resolution, and the second number grows with success.
- Meeting booking is possible but not native to the product's design.
- Small teams pay for platform depth they do not use.
- A helpdesk, a live chat widget and a sales chat are three tools wearing one price tag.
If you are weighing Intercom against Darwin specifically, we keep a direct Darwin vs Intercom comparison. The rest of this page is for everyone else.
If you need website chat that books meetings
Start with the group Intercom was never really built for, and the one we happen to know best. Here the job is narrow. Someone lands on your site with a question, gets a proper answer drawn from your own content, and leaves with a time on a rep's calendar. Four tools do that well, and they cost wildly different amounts.

Darwin
Sales and marketing teams that want website chat to book meetings from day one and get better on its own.
Teams that need a support inbox, ticketing or outbound email.
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- 5 free bookings
- Native booking
- Via integration
- Improves on its own
- Yes
Paste your URL and Darwin reads your site, drafts the assistant and writes the first opening line. A visitor asks a question, gets an answer from your content, and when they seem interested, picks a time on your team's calendar through Calendly, RevenueHero or HubSpot Meetings, without leaving the chat.
Then comes the part none of the other twelve tools on this page do. Darwin gets better on its own. It tries different opening lines on each page, keeps the ones that lead to more meetings, drops the rest and tests again. Nobody schedules the experiments or reads the reports.
Pricing runs the other way from Intercom. Base plan fee, plus bookings beyond the allowance. Origin costs $0/mo and includes 5 free bookings; after that it is $20/booking, or a plan from $99/mo. Chats are unlimited on every plan, so a busy month costs you nothing unless it also books meetings.
See the whole flow in how Darwin works, or run your own numbers on the pricing page.
Where it stands out
- The only tool here that improves its own openings without intervention
- Books meetings inside the chat on the scheduler you already run
- Learns your business from your website in under an hour
- Charges per booked meeting, never per seat or per answer
Limitations
- No support inbox, ticketing or help center
- No outbound email or visitor identification
- Younger product with a shorter track record than the incumbents
Verdict. If you bought Intercom for pipeline and got a helpdesk, this is the swap. If you need the helpdesk, keep reading.

HubSpot
Companies already on HubSpot CRM that want chat without another vendor or another invoice.
Teams on a different CRM, or anyone who wants the opening line to improve without hand-editing flows.
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- Free tools
- Native booking
- Yes
- Improves on its own
- Not documented
If your CRM is HubSpot you already own a chat widget. Free tools include live chat and a limited chatbot with HubSpot branding. Paid hubs start at $20/seat/mo, and the Breeze customer agent, the AI layer, answers from your website pages and knowledge base. It is metered like Intercom's Fin, just in credits: The customer agent uses 50 HubSpot Credits per resolved conversation. Starter includes none.
Booking works the HubSpot way. Chatbots share a HubSpot meetings link; the customer agent can route qualified leads to a meeting link. Not a calendar inside the chat, but already wired to your contacts and your reps.
Side-by-side: Darwin vs HubSpot.
Where it stands out
- Free live chat and bots, native to the CRM
- Meetings links and routing already in the platform
- Customer agent learns from public website URLs
Limitations
- AI agent costs credits on top of seats
- Bots are flow builders; you write every opening
- Sales chat is a feature here, not the product
Verdict. Switch the free chat on before you buy anything. Add a dedicated tool when you need chat that books and improves by itself.

Qualified
Enterprise revenue teams on Salesforce that want an AI SDR with a services team behind it.
Small teams, non-Salesforce shops, or anyone who wants a price before a sales call.
- Starting price
- Not documented
- Free plan or trial
- Not documented
- Native booking
- Yes
- Improves on its own
- Feedback-based
Qualified built Piper for one kind of company: the enterprise that already runs on Salesforce. Piper knows who is on the site because it reads intent from Salesforce and the marketing stack, greets known accounts by name, and pulls a human rep in while a high-value visitor is still reading. Once the visitor is ready, Piper schedules sales meetings on the right rep's calendar.
You feed it Uploaded messaging, product details, knowledge bases and FAQs. As for cost, you will not find a figure on the site. Premier, Enterprise and Ultimate each end in a Schedule a demo button, and the quote arrives after the call.
Side-by-side: Darwin vs Qualified.
Where it stands out
- Deep Salesforce integration and account-level personalization
- Piper books meetings and follows up by email, on video, voice and text
- Mature enterprise implementation and support
Limitations
- No published pricing and no trial
- Built for Salesforce shops; smaller teams pay for depth they will not use
- Implementation is a project
Verdict. The enterprise replacement for Intercom-as-sales-chat. If you have RevOps and a Salesforce budget, start here.

Warmly
B2B teams that want to know which companies are on the site, then chat with them.
Teams whose main problem is the conversation itself, or budgets under five figures a year.
- Starting price
- $10,000/yr
- Free plan or trial
- Not documented
- Native booking
- Yes
- Improves on its own
- Feedback loops
Warmly starts from a different question than Intercom did: not “who is chatting?” but “which companies are on the site right now?” It de-anonymizes visitors at the account level, then its AI inbound agent picks up the conversation, qualifies, and books: Direct calendar booking in chat through Google Calendar, Outlook or Chili Piper links.
You buy it on a contract. AI Web-Deanonymization starts at $10,000 per year; Inbound Chat at $20,000 per year. The agent learns from documents, FAQs and example conversations you hand it; whether it reads your site on its own is not specified.
Side-by-side: Darwin vs Warmly.
Where it stands out
- Company-level visitor identification built in
- Books onto Google, Outlook or Chili Piper calendars from the chat
- Autopilot tier adds automated outreach to identified accounts
Limitations
- Five-figure annual contracts, no free plan
- Website crawling for knowledge is not specified
- A revenue-intelligence product first, chat second
Verdict. Choose Warmly when knowing the account matters more than the chat itself.

If you need a support inbox
This is the group most “Intercom alternative” searches are really about: a shared inbox, a help center, AI that deflects the easy tickets, and a bill that does not surprise anyone. We do not build support software, so these sections lean on published pricing and named limitations rather than hands-on opinion. Five tools, in the order we would try them.

Help Scout
Small and mid-sized support teams that want a calm shared inbox, a docs site and a help widget, with AI that is optional.
Sales teams; anyone who needs meetings booked from the chat.
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- Free plan
- Native booking
- Not documented
- Improves on its own
- Not documented
Help Scout is the closest thing to Intercom-without-the-invoice for support teams. Shared inboxes, a Docs knowledge base, and Beacon, the help widget you embed on your site, all in one plan. The Free plan covers 5 users, 1 Inbox and 1 Docs site. Paid plans start at $25/user/mo.
AI is priced the Intercom way but cheaper: AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution as an add-on. It learns from your website and other sources you point it at. Meeting booking is not part of the product.
Pricing details are on Help Scout's pricing page.
Where it stands out
- Free plan for small teams, then a simple per-user price
- AI Answers with a long free trial before the per-resolution fee applies
- Beacon widget covers chat, docs search and contact forms
Limitations
- No meeting booking
- Per-resolution AI fee, so the same bill dynamic as Fin once you scale it
- Fewer enterprise controls than Zendesk
Verdict. The default pick for a support team leaving Intercom over price.
Facts checked Sep 16, 2026Help Scout

Zendesk
Larger support organisations that need ticketing depth, routing rules and reporting across channels.
Small teams, or anyone whose chat is supposed to sell rather than resolve.
- Starting price
- $69/agent/mo
- Free plan or trial
- 14 day trial
- Native booking
- Not documented
- Improves on its own
- Not documented
When a support organisation outgrows Help Scout, Zendesk is usually where it lands. You get ticketing, messaging, a help center, workforce tools, and AI agents that can read your website directly: A web crawler can import website pages as an AI agent knowledge source. It is not cheap. Suite Team is $69 per agent per month on monthly billing. You can try it first, though, with a 14 day trial.
The AI follows the same metering logic as Intercom's Fin: AI agents are billed per automated resolution beyond the plan allowance. Nothing in the public docs describes booking a meeting from a messaging agent, so treat that as a no until a rep shows you otherwise.
Pricing details are on Zendesk's pricing page.
Where it stands out
- Deepest ticketing and routing in the group
- Web crawler feeds the AI agent's knowledge
- Scales to large, multi-region support teams
Limitations
- Per-agent pricing at the high end of this list
- AI billed per automated resolution beyond the allowance
- No meeting booking
Verdict. The safe enterprise choice when support is the whole job.

Freshchat
Support teams that want messaging plus Freddy AI on a per-agent price, with a free tier to start.
B2B sales teams that need the meeting booked inside the chat.
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- 14 day trial
- Native booking
- Via integration
- Improves on its own
- Not documented
Freshchat is Freshworks' messaging product, and it pairs with Freshdesk for ticketing. The Free plan has no monthly fee for up to 10 agents. Growth is $23/agent/mo. The Freddy AI Agent learns from public web pages you add as URLs, and it is metered in sessions: Freddy AI Agent costs $49 per 100 sessions after the free allowance.
For meetings, Agents share a Google Calendar and visitors pick a slot in the chat. That is closer to native booking than most support tools manage.
Side-by-side: Darwin vs Freshchat.
Where it stands out
- Free plan for up to 10 agents
- Freddy AI learns from URLs you add
- Calendar slots can be picked inside the chat
Limitations
- AI sessions are metered after the included allowance
- Support-first; sales use means working around the inbox
- Ticketing lives in a separate Freshworks product
Verdict. A sensible mid-market support alternative, and the one in this group that comes closest to booking meetings.

Front
Teams that run customer operations out of email and want chat, SMS and a shared inbox in one place.
Anyone who wants a public help center or booking from website chat.
- Starting price
- $25/seat/mo
- Free plan or trial
- 14 day trial
- Native booking
- In email only
- Improves on its own
- Not documented
Front is a shared inbox first. Email, chat and SMS land in one queue with assignments, comments and rules. Starter is $25 per seat per month, up to 10 seats. There is a 14 day trial. AI is sold as add-ons: AI Copilot and Smart QA are $20 per seat per month each as add-ons; Autopilot starts at $0.05 per conversation.
Front Chat is a channel, not a product, and meeting booking is limited to inserting suggested times into messages.
Pricing details are on Front's pricing page.
Where it stands out
- Strongest email-plus-chat inbox in the group
- AI add-ons are optional and priced per seat
- Clear seat caps per plan, so the bill is predictable
Limitations
- No help center of its own
- Booking is email-oriented, not chat-native
- AI trains on your data; website knowledge is not specified
Verdict. Pick Front if your team lives in email and chat is a side channel.

Crisp
Small teams that want a support inbox, chat widget and AI agent on one flat monthly price.
Teams that need meetings booked in chat or enterprise-grade ticketing.
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- Free plan
- Native booking
- Not documented
- Improves on its own
- Not documented
Crisp charges per workspace, not per seat: A flat rate per workspace regardless of conversation volume. The Free plan is free forever with 2 seats included. Mini is $45/mo. There is a A free plan, plus a 14-day free trial of any paid plan without a card., and the AI agent runs on credits included with each plan: AI credits are included per plan: $5 on Mini, $25 on Essentials, $75 on Plus.
Meeting booking is not documented, and the pricing page does not say what the AI is trained on.
Pricing details are on Crisp's pricing page.
Where it stands out
- Flat price per workspace, so adding people costs nothing
- Free plan with two seats and the widget
- AI agent credits are included on paid plans
Limitations
- No meeting booking documented
- AI training sources not specified on the public pages
- Fewer enterprise controls
Verdict. Best value in the support group for a small team that wants predictable pricing.

If you need live chat on a budget
Not everyone needs a platform. Sometimes what you want is a chat widget on the site, a bot that fields the obvious questions, and a bill you can forget about. These four cover that range, from completely free to a few dollars a seat, and none of them will try to sell you a helpdesk.

Tidio
Small businesses and online stores that want an affordable widget with an AI agent.
B2B sales teams that need the meeting booked inside the chat, not a link.
- Starting price
- $0/mo
- Free plan or trial
- 7 day trial
- Native booking
- Via integration
- Improves on its own
- Not documented
Tidio is customer-service chat for small teams. The Free plan has no monthly fee. Paid plans start at $29/mo, and the Lyro AI agent is sold on top: Lyro AI Agent quota starts at $39 per month for 50 conversations on monthly billing.
Lyro learns from website URLs you paste in. For meetings, Lyro can share a Calendly scheduling link through a Book-a-call Action. That is a link, not a calendar in the conversation.
Side-by-side: Darwin vs Tidio.
Where it stands out
- Free plan, plus a 7 day trial of paid features
- Lyro trains on website URLs you provide
- Simple setup for non-technical teams
Limitations
- Booking is a shared link, not in-chat
- Priced by conversation volume, so costs climb with traffic
- Built for support and stores, not B2B pipeline
Verdict. The budget widget most people mean when they say cheap Intercom alternative.

LiveChat
Sales and support teams that want polished human live chat with agent-assist AI, per seat.
Teams that want the AI to talk to visitors on its own, or to book meetings in chat.
- Starting price
- $25/agent/mo
- Free plan or trial
- 14 day trial
- Native booking
- Link to scheduler
- Improves on its own
- Manual tests
LiveChat is the veteran of the category, and it still does human chat very well. Starter is $25 per person per month on monthly billing. There is a 14 day trial. The customer-facing AI is a separate product: The customer-facing AI Agent is a separate Text product from $19 per user per month.
Meetings are handled by linking out: The welcome screen can link to an external scheduling page.
Side-by-side: Darwin vs LiveChat.
Where it stands out
- Mature, reliable human live chat
- Agent Copilot can crawl your site for internal knowledge
- Large integration marketplace
Limitations
- AI agent is a second product with a second price
- No in-chat booking
- Per-seat pricing with no free plan
Verdict. Right if you want humans in the chat and AI helping them, not replacing them.

- Native booking
- Not documented
- Improves on its own
- Not documented
tawk.to is free, and has been for years. Free live chat with paid monthly add-ons. The live chat product is free, with unlimited agents. The paid extras are small: AI Assist answers chats from your knowledge base from $29 per month; removing the Powered by tawk.to branding is $29 per month.
The AI Assist bot learns from a knowledge base you write and shortcut FAQs, not from your site. Meeting booking is not part of the product.
Pricing details are on tawk.to's pricing page.
Where it stands out
- Genuinely free live chat with unlimited agents
- Cheap, optional add-ons for branding and AI
- Quick to install
Limitations
- AI trains on a knowledge base you maintain, not your website
- No meeting booking
- Support-oriented; no pipeline features
Verdict. The free fallback. Fine for a widget; not a sales tool.

Intercom versus the alternatives on price
Three pricing models are competing on this page, and the model matters more than the sticker.
Seats plus AI usage. This is Intercom's model, and Zendesk, Help Scout, Freshchat, Front, Chatwoot and HubSpot share it: a price per person, then a metered charge for what the AI does, whether that is a resolution, a session, a conversation or a credit. Intercom starts at $39/seat/mo plus From $0.99/outcome; Help Scout at $25/user/mo plus $0.75 per resolution; Zendesk at $69/agent/mo. Good for support teams that want to count deflection. The bill rises as the AI succeeds.
Flat or free. Crisp charges $45/mo per workspace with AI credits included. tawk.to is free with add-ons from Add-ons from $29/mo. Tidio has a free plan and a $29/mo Starter. Predictable, and fine until you need the chat to do more than answer.
Per booked meeting. Darwin's model: $0/mo to start, 5 free bookings, then $20/booking or a plan from $99/mo with bookings included. Chats are unlimited. You pay when a visitor becomes a meeting and not before, which is the opposite of paying per answer.
If you want to compare the seat-plus-usage model against per-meeting pricing for your own traffic, the pricing pagehas a calculator.
How to switch from Intercom without losing anything
Most teams can get through this in a week. The first three steps make sure you keep your history; the last three make sure you keep your pipeline.
- Export everything before you cancel: conversations, contacts, help center articles and whatever content Fin was trained on. Once the account closes, Intercom's export is the only copy you will have.
- Write down the baseline. Pull three months of chat volume and resolution rate, and if you used Fin for Sales, the number of meetings booked per page. Whatever you pick next has to beat these figures, and you will not be able to pull them later.
- Rebuild your knowledge from the source rather than from Intercom. Most of the tools above read your website or help center directly, so fix the stale pages before you point a new assistant at them.
- Decide, in one sentence, what the chat is for. Support tools and sales tools part ways at this step. If the answer is meetings, wire up the booking flow and book a test meeting yourself before anyone else sees it.
- Swap the script. Take the Intercom Messenger snippet out, drop the new widget in, and click through every page template to make sure it shows up where you expect.
- Run both for a week if you can. Send half your traffic to the new tool, compare it against the baseline, and then move the rest.
How to choose
Thirteen tools is too many to hold in your head. The same list, by the situation you are in.
- Chat should turn visitors into meetings and you want it to keep improving by itself: Darwin.
- You already pay for HubSpot: switch on the free chat this week before spending anything.
- Enterprise team on Salesforce with RevOps: Qualified.
- Knowing which companies are on the site matters as much as the conversation: Warmly.
- Support team leaving over price: Help Scout, or Crisp if you want a flat rate.
- Large support organisation that needs ticketing depth: Zendesk.
- Support team that wants a free tier and AI on URLs: Freshchat.
- Your team lives in email and chat is a side channel: Front.
- Small business or store: Tidio. Human chat with AI assist: LiveChat.
- Engineers who want to self-host: Chatwoot. You just need a free widget: tawk.to.
Whatever you choose, hold it to the question Intercom made you ask in the first place: what am I paying for? Seats charge for people. Resolutions charge for answers. Meetings charge for the thing you actually wanted.
Alternatives questions.
What is the best Intercom alternative?
There is no single answer, because people use Intercom for different things. If you need a support inbox with a help center attached, Help Scout is where most teams land, and Zendesk is the enterprise version of the same move. If the chat is supposed to book meetings and get better at it on its own, Darwin is the closest fit. And if you already pay for HubSpot, you own a chat widget you may not have switched on.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Intercom?
Plenty, depending on how you count. Help Scout and Freshchat come in under Intercom per seat, and both have free tiers to start on. Crisp charges one flat rate per workspace, so adding people costs nothing. tawk.to is free with a couple of paid add-ons. Darwin charges per booked meeting rather than per seat or per answer, which for a sales team works out cheaper in a quiet month and only costs more when it is actually producing meetings.
Is there a free Intercom alternative?
Yes, more than one. Help Scout, Crisp, Chatwoot, tawk.to, Tidio and HubSpot all offer free plans, each capped somewhere on seats or conversations, so read the limits before you commit a team to one. On the sales side, Darwin's Origin plan costs nothing and comes with 5 free bookings.
What is the best alternative to Intercom Fin?
Ask what you want the AI to do. If the job is deflecting support tickets, Help Scout's AI Answers and Zendesk's AI agents do the same work, and both bill per resolution just as Fin does. If the job is pipeline, Darwin answers from your site, books the meeting inside the chat, and charges you for the meeting rather than the answer.
Which Intercom alternative is best for sales teams?
Four of the thirteen were built for sales. Darwin, if you want chat that books meetings and keeps improving its own opening lines. Qualified, if you are an enterprise running on Salesforce. Warmly, if knowing which companies are on the site matters as much as talking to them. HubSpot, if you already pay for the CRM and want to try the chat you own first.
Does Intercom have a free plan?
Not any more. You get a 14 day trial, and after that you pick a paid plan. Seats start at $39/seat/mo, and Fin, the AI agent, is billed on top of that per outcome.
