The best AI chatbot for a WordPress site depends on what the chat is for. A plugin runs inside WordPress. It gets a settings page in your dashboard, it can read your posts directly, and it updates from the Plugins screen like everything else. A script is a single tag you add once, through Google Tag Manager, a snippet plugin such as WPCode, or your theme's shared footer. A plugin is the better route when the bot needs to live inside WordPress: to read private post types, to see WooCommerce carts and orders, or to run on your own AI keys. The cost is upkeep. Every plugin is one more thing that can clash with your caching layer, your page builder or the next core update, and a chatbot that loads its own files on every page can drag down a PageSpeed score.

A script is the better route for almost everything else. There is nothing to update, a theme change does not break it, and if you already use Tag Manager it is one more tag. The trade-off is that it only knows what is public, which for most business sites is exactly what the bot should know.

For a small site, the most useful free test is a plan whose cap you will not hit in the first month. Compare the conversation or message limit with last month's traffic before you choose.

The plugin route

1. In your dashboard, go to Plugins, then Add New, and search for the plugin by name: Jotform AI Chatbot, WPBot, Tidio, AI Engine, Chatbase, or AI chatbot by Text for ChatBot.com.
2. Install and activate it, then open its settings from the left menu.
3. Connect what it asks for. For WPBot and AI Engine that is your own AI provider key; for Chatbase it is your Agent ID; for the others it is your account with the vendor.
4. Point it at your content: run the site crawl or the embedding step, and add any documents.
5. Set the widget's look, position and first message, and choose which pages it appears on.
6. Clear your cache, open the site in a private window and ask the bot three real questions from your pricing page.

The script route

1. Create an account on the vendor's site. For Darwin, enter your website address so it can read your pages.
2. Copy the snippet the vendor gives you.
3. Add it once: as a Custom HTML tag on all pages in Google Tag Manager, in a snippet plugin such as WPCode, or in your theme's shared footer.
4. Publish the tag or save the theme, clear your cache and open the site in a private window.
5. Ask the bot three real questions. If it books meetings, book one yourself and check it lands on the right calendar.
